Dec 2011 News: Earth HasTwin Moons,, Is an asteroid really a Moon ?

Earth having Twin Moons!! Not really a big deal since a Moon is NOT a tiny asteroid, so why all the talk of a second moon? Makes one curious as to the subtle pictures being displayed of two large moons which is a contradiction to the actual size of a small tiny asteroid.  Is there more to it? Maybe not... Probably not..... Are they preparing for another object to be seen soon in the skies? Does this disarm fear for a future event?

Pondering is very good..

But one has to wonder why the hoax about it? Or at the very least a seeming hoax, and exaggerated one if it is a tiny bitty asteroid, because asteroids are not really moons in a technical view...  Why not just call it a small rock... Why not say a small asteroid is orbiting; so why use the word Moon at all?

See the various articles and vids below on this topic. There are newly recent articles along with older ones.

Two Suns? Maybe...... in connection to Nibiru/Planet X, but Two Moons..... dont think so.. There is no doubt though that our Moon looks strange as of late, but one cannot help but wonder a smidgen if it is a set up for something coming, an up coming event to be seen in the skies.....  An acclimation or preparation? Who knows but surely pondering is healthy and wise.

They already went the second moon round in 2007 and even before that date, so why now all of a sudden again? Why open a floodgate on it again.

Earth has more than one moon, astronomers confirm

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – Wed, Dec 21, 2011

There are at least two moons orbiting Earth at any given time

Researchers at Cornell University say that what we know as the Moon is in fact not the only one orbiting our planet at any given time. Smaller objects regularly inhabit the Earth's orbit, usually leaving after a few months to continue on their celestial journeys.

The discovery is considered a major breakthrough for space research because scientists had been working toward visiting asteroids outside of Earth's orbit for research. While these temporary moons are too small for a shuttle landing, they are prime for research from a relatively close distance.

However, it's still to be determined whether the announcement will capture the public's attention like previously revealed New Moons. Either way, it should be a decidedly more pleasant experience for all involved.

The new paper titled "The population of natural Earth satellites," from Cornell University's Mikael Granvik, Jeremie Vaubaillon and Robert Jedicke states that these "secret moons" enter and exit the Earth's orbit without notice.

"At any given time, there should be at least one natural Earth satellite of 1-meter diameter orbiting the Earth," Granvik writes.

Scientists have confirmed at least one such temporary moon, discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona in 2006.

"Our results are consistent with the single known natural [temporarily-captured orbiter] 2006 RH120, a few-meter diameter object that was captured for about a year starting in June 2006," the report says.

Hoax Site ?

BUSBY -  Residents of this small Australian town were shocked to see two full moons in sky!
Tonight, there’s a full moon in Busby, Australia.  Many residents were admiring it when at 1:20 a.m., local time, a second moon rose in the night sky.  Residents couldn’t believe what they were seeing!

Astronomers across the world were alerted to this sighting and have confirmed the existence of a second earth moon.  “We have never seen anything like this before,” said researcher Rich Montano at the University of California, Los Angeles. “There had been some rumors that a second moon was seen over Hong Son, Thailand  in 1967, but it was only seen for a few hours and only in that one location, but now everyone across Australia can see the second moon.  It’s awe-inspiring.”

Residents of Los Angeles, and the rest of the world, will be able to see the second moon with the naked eye as night falls.  Busby residents are out in the streets staring up in wonder at the second moon. “It’s exciting, but also frightening,” said Carol McNulty of Busby. “It’s so beautiful, but what does it mean?  Why did the second moon appear tonight?  Why?”

“End of times” fanatics are already saying that the appearance of a s second moon is signaling that the world will end.  “This was predicted in the prophecy of Nostradamus in the 16th Century,”  said Nostradamus expert Fred Desmarais of Lyon, France. “This is the quatrain he wrote predicting the second moon:

In the sky a second light will rise
Bring back the great King of Angolmois
And with Toulouse, ten years after the shining
Across the earth shall come the great flame”

Demarais said that the rise of the second moons meant that within ten years of the second moon sighting, “the earth will turn into a ball of flame.” He  was on a flight to Busby to speak with local residents and gather more information about this major event.

Others in Australia believe this second moon is a hoax of some sort.  “I bet that magician David Blaine is behind this.  It’s the only explanation,” said Roger McMahon of Sydney.  WWN tried to contact  David Blaine, but he was not available.  He was finishing his second month stuffed inside a refrigerator.
NASA astronomers are studying the second moon carefully.  The powerful Japanese telescope, the Subaru, is also focused on the second  moon.  When asked to explain this phenomenon the head of NASA’s Lunar Science Division had this simple statement, “We don’t know.  We are studying it, but it has us all baffled.”
While NASA astronomers are trying to solve this mystery, go out tonight and look at the second moon!

Earth has always had two moons!
ANI
London, December 22, 201

The Earth has always had a temporary second moon, new study has claimed. When astronomers caught sight of a mysterious titanium white object circling around the Earth in 2006, they assumed it was a spent rocket.

But it was actually a small asteroid captured by the Earth’s gravitational field that rotated around the Earth until June 2007.

n the new study, astrophysicists at Cornell claim that this little moon was not an anomaly as these asteroids come and go so often it means our planet always has a temporary second moon.

Earth moonAccording to Cornell University’s Mikael Granvik, Jeremie Vaubaillon and Robert Jedicke, they have calculated the population of “irregular natural satellites that are temporarily captured” by Earth.

In their study, researchers say that while these moons are small, the scientific implications of this discovery are phenomenal.

“At any given time, there should be at least one natural Earth satellite of 1-meter diameter orbiting the Earth,” the Daily Mail quoted the team as saying.

Instead of having to send crews to asteroids astronomers can wait until they come closer to Earth to intercept and learn more about the origins of our solar system.

Although the small asteroids, which measure just a few metres across they qualified as a natural satellite just like our Moon, are difficult to track, astronomers believe they could potentially save millions if NASA waited for it to orbit the earth, instead of launching missions into the solar system.

Even though NASA couldn't land on an asteroid, which was just a few metres, it could get close to collect information on fact finding missions.

The study has been published on the Cornell University website.

Earth has always had two moons: The discovery of mysterious tiny asteroids which constantly circle our planet

  • Asteroids come and go so often we 'always' have a second moon
  • Rather than launching missions to explore asteroids, we can simply wait for them to orbit Earth

But it was actually a small asteroid captured by our gravitational field which rotated around the Earth until June 2007.

And a new study published yesterday by astrophysicists at Cornell claims this little moon was not an anomaly - these asteroids come and go so often it means our planet always has a temporary second moon.

Have astronomers discovered Earth's second moon?

I was recently watching a program about popular misconceptions which stated that the Earth has two moons. Apparently the second moon was discovered in 1994, has a diameter of 3 km and orbits the Earth once every 770 years. I would like to know if this is true and if so, why is there no information about it in modern amateur astronomy books.

I'm really glad you sent this email, because we've received several questions about a second moon of Earth, and I wasn't sure what people were referring to or where they had heard it, but the details you included made it possible to figure it out!

Anyway, to answer your question, I think the object that you're referring to is called Cruithne, which is a 3 mile (5 km) object in a horseshoe orbit around Earth that has a period of 770 years. You can read a press release about it at Space.com. It was discovered in 1986, but it took a lot of observations in order to figure out its complicated orbit, which was determined in 1997.

In the press release, one of the scientists involved with the study called the object a "moon", because it shares Earth's orbit, however, it's definitely not a moon like our Moon. First, a horseshoe orbit is much different from the elliptical orbit that the Moon makes around Earth. The Moon actually orbits the planet Earth, while Cruithne just shares the Earth's orbit around the Sun. You can read more about its motion and about horseshoe orbits at a question previously answered by Dave, or at this page about Cruithne. The orbit of Cruithne is also very inclined with respect to Earth's orbit around the Sun, so it moves in and out of the plane that the most of the planets orbit in. This large inclination is part of the reason that Cruithne won't collide with Earth.

Second, objects trapped in orbits like Cruithne's are only expected to remain in the orbit for a few thousand to tens of thousands of years, which may sound like a long time, but it's actually fairly short in the timescale of Solar System history. After Cruithne escapes from its present orbit, it may become a Near Earth Asteroid on a different close-to-Earth orbit, or move onto an orbit more similar to our Moon's orbit, in which case it would be more like a "real" moon. No one seems quite sure which scenario will happen.

So I guess I would think of Cruithne as more of a Near Earth Asteroid that's trapped by Earth's gravity, not as a moon. And in fact, it's classified by astronomers as an Aten asteroid, which is a group of Near-Earth Asteroids on similar orbits. But Cruithne is a good example of the fact that Earth's gravity can interact with nearby asteroids, bringing them closer to Earth or forcing them onto different, strange, orbits.

Two Moons On August 27 - The Latest 'Old' Hoax!

Two Moons on August

Earlier, I received one from that never ending stream of forwarded emails. An unsuspecting friend sent it to me, expecting me to forward it to the people I know. Unfortunately, that thread stopped with me as I was aware of the facts. I am sure at least some you must have received the same or similar mail at some point of time. For the uninitiated it goes like this.......
"[Don't miss it out...

This phenomana is not worth missing.Put this in your remember memo

Dear All,
Don't miss to see - TWO MOON ON 27 AUGUST*
*27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............*

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again]"
Two Moons?

Hmmm.. Sounds interesting and makes you want to keep it in your reminder, as the mail claims that NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again!

I am sure a lot of people all over the world waited anxiously for this to happen on August 27, 2007, expecting to see this miracle.

Well, perhaps they should have read this first. People saw it first in July 2003, and then again in 2005 and 2006 and now we are seeing it again this year, and I believe we will keep seeing it for a few years more! I mean The Mail. Not the 'phenomena'.

Two Moons

In July 2003, the title of the mail was "Mars Spectacular" or "Close Encounter". Indeed, Mars really did come very close to earth on August 27, 2003, within 56 million Kilometers, making it appear 6 times larger and 85 times brighter than it usually does, in its closest approach to earth in nearly 60,000 years. It is a fact that every 2 years Mars come a littl closer to earth, but nothing 'as spectacular' as in 2003 is going to happen again this year. But these chain letters surface every year predicting the samething, although this year's mail had a common head "Two Moons On August 27".

It is a little ironic that people on some parts of the world will not even see a single moon on that day! A total lunar eclipse is will be occuring on some parts of the world on that day. But this year also Mars will come a little close to earth but it will still be only around 85 million Kilometers and it wil not be anything near the 'Mars spectacular' that happened in 2003.

So people, please stop forwarding this chain letter. Considerable amount of time, energy, money and resources are wasted everyday by people forwarding seemingly useful but false information.

Earth once might have had 2 moons

Artist's rendering of a collision between Earth's moon and a companion moon, thought to have occurred 4.4 billion years ago (Santa Cruz ,AP/ Martin Jutzi and Erik Asphaug, University of California)
(CBS/AP)
WASHINGTON - In a spectacle that might have beguiled poets, lovers and songwriters if only they had been around to see it, Earth once had two moons, astronomers now think. But the smaller one smashed into the other in what is being called the "big splat."

The result: Our planet was left with a single bulked-up and ever-so-slightly lopsided moon.

The astronomers came up with the scenario to explain why the moon's far side is so much more hilly than the one that is always facing Earth.
Nature

The theory, outlined Wednesday in the journal Nature, comes complete with computer model runs showing how it might have happened and an illustration that looks like the bigger moon getting a pie in the face.
Outside experts said the idea makes sense, but they aren't completely sold yet.

Talk about a big bang

This all supposedly happened about 4.4 billion years ago, long before there was any life on Earth to gaze up and see the strange sight of dual moons. The moons themselves were young, formed about 100 million years earlier when a giant planet smashed into Earth. They both orbited Earth and sort of rose in the sky together, the smaller one trailing a few steps behind like a little sister in tow.

The smaller one was a planetary lightweight. The other was three times wider and 25 times heavier, its gravity so strong that the smaller one just couldn't resist, even though it was parked a good bit away.

"They're destined to collide. There's no way out. ... This big splat is a low-velocity collision," said study co-author Erik Asphaug, a planetary scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

What Asphaug calls a slow crash is relative: It happened at more than 5,000 mph, but that's about as slow as possible when you are talking planetary smashups. It's slow enough that the rocks didn't melt.

And because the smaller moon was more than 600 miles wide, the crash took a while to finish even at 5,000 mph. Asphaug likened the smaller moon to a rifle bullet and said, "People would be bored looking at it because it's taking 10 minutes just for the bullet to bury itself in the moon. This is an event if you were looking at, you'd need a big bag of popcorn."

The rocks and crust from the smaller moon would have spread over and around the bigger moon without creating a crater, as a faster crash would have done.

"The physics is really surprisingly similar to a pie in the face," Asphaug said.
And about a day later, everything was settled and the near and far sides of the moon looked different, Asphaug said.

Solar system's oddball

Co-author Martin Jutzi of the University of Bern in Switzerland said the study was an attempt to explain the odd crust and mountainous terrain of the moon's far side. Asphaug noticed it looked as if something had been added to the surface, so the duo started running computer simulations of cosmic crashes.

Earth had always been an oddball in the solar system as the only planet with a single moon. While Venus and Mercury have no moons, Mars has two, while Saturn and Jupiter have more than 60 each. Even tiny Pluto, which was demoted to dwarf status, has four moons.

The theory was the buzz this week in Woods Hole, Mass., at a conference of scientists working on NASA's next robotic mission to the moon, said H. Jay Melosh of Purdue University.

"We can't find anything wrong with it," Melosh said. "It may or may not be right."
Planetary scientist Alan Stern, former NASA associate administrator for science, said it is a "very clever new idea," but one that is not easily tested to learn whether it is right.

A second moon isn't just an astronomical matter. The moon plays a big role in literature and song. And poet Todd Davis, a professor of literature at Penn State University, said this idea of two moons - one essentially swallowing the other - will capture the literary imagination.
"I'll probably be dreaming about it and trying to work on a poem," he said.

Earth Has 2 Moons!

Who knew?
Earth has two moons? Is it true? Yes… and NASA has the picture to prove it!

I like to share with you this beautiful picture of mother Earth and its two moons.
The object in the middle, is what was then Earth’s largest artificial moon the Russian Mir Space Station. The bright dot to the right of Mir is Earth’s natural satellite, the Moon.

Beneath you can see the lovely curvature of the blue planet called earth, with thick stormy clouds above. In contrast, you can see the cold darkness of space all around.

The picture was taken by the Space Shuttle Discovery crew during their June 1998 mission.

Earth has 2 moons? It's not lunacy, but new theory

Super Moon over Cascade Mountains
We are not alone, Earthlings. At least, our moon most likely isn’t alone.
Astronomers say the Earth probably has two moons right now, and that’s not at all unusual. The first one is the big glowing object you see in the sky at night. The second? That would be a small asteroid.

It’s not uncommon for man-made objects, otherwise known as space junk, to fall into the Earth’s gravitational pull and orbit close to the planet’s atmosphere. But over the last few years, scientists have started documenting small asteroids that fall into moon-like orbits for a brief period of time.

“At any given time, there should be at least one natural Earth satellite of 1-meter diameter orbiting the Earth,” said Mikael Granvik of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
From the MIT technology review:
These objects should hang around for about 10 months and make about three revolutions of the planet. That means Earth ought to have a metre-sized moon right now.
This is of more than academic interest. NASA has repeatedly said it is interested in sending humans to a near Earth asteroid. What better than to kick off with one that is in orbit here?
Better yet, we might be able to collect an asteroid in close orbit to the Earth.

“The scientific potential of being able to first remotely characterize a meteoroid and then visit and bring it back to Earth would be unprecedented,” said Granvik.
Of course, scientists say that once upon a time, there might have been two real moons orbiting Earth.

December 22, 2011: In science news, a new study by astrophysicists at Cornell claims that our planet always has a temporary second moon!!!

This new study states that these tiny asteroids, also called little moons, come and go…Thus we always have a second mini moon! How cool is that?! Although these moons are small, the scientific implications of their discovery are phenomenal!

Although these are small asteroids, they qualify as a natural satellite just like our very own moon. With Valentine’s Day round the corner, a lot of girls will want to go to the moon! Thank god we have another one, just in case it gets too crowded!
